Both the functionalist communicative and the formal aestheticist models miss the animating principle of this genre and even era of literature.
It seems that this work, as is the case with some modern art, is written only for those of the inner circle who speak the same language. There are entire paragraphs which could be expressed more clearly with simple English. Consequently it is difficult to figure out what the author intends to be his point. It is curious that a sentence or paragraph of Cicero or of Quintilian is clear and comprehensible but a sentence or paragraph from this book leaves the reader helpless and confused. If anyone has the belief that progress has been made in clarity of expression from the past to the present, this book will demolish that view.
