I am familiar with Parker's scholarship through his work on Calvin's commentaries, and particularly in his slender volume, Calvin: An Introduction to his Thought, which summarizes and interprets the Institutes. His formidable Calvin research shows in this biography that is, warmly sympathetic to its subject, and is painstaking in its historical detail. That said; do not fear this as a book heavy and dry. It reads smoothly as a novel, with plots and subplots ever revealing aspects of the man at the centre of the story.

Running through the text includes a ` "story" within the story' of how the Institutes were conceived and edited at various stages, and ultimately settled upon in a final form. Calvin's literary output is chronicled against the struggles he faced as a churchman and a reformer. Both his friends and foes are given a place in the book to enrich the drama, so to speak.

The emergence of Calvin as a man is what struck me most. Not Calvin the pastor, nor even Calvin the theologian, but Calvin the man. Certainly the Genevan reformer was a man head and shoulders above many of his contemporaries as an academic. Also vigorous in his indefatigable energy and discipline as a servant of the church was Calvin. However, it is the man of God plain and simple that shines through. His humanity is genuine in Parker's portrayal: A man with a passion, no less. The writer explodes the myths surrounding the so-called tyrant of Geneva. Parker also rightly and correctly instructs his readers about the mechanics of sixteenth century civil rule and the magistrate's role in punishing heresy.

Though many volumes on the life of Calvin abound, one would do well to be acquainted with this text. Particularly illuminating are the two appendices in which parker examines a case for redating Calvin's life, and in interpreting Calvin's "conversion" as chronicled by the reformer in his preface to his commentary to the Psalms. There is a mini commentary on the conversion narrative that is both challenging and illuminating.

My concerns about Parker are limited to one matter. He appears to read Calvin through Barthian lenses in expositing some of the Frenchman's theological convictions. I saw this clearly in Parker's treatment of Calvin's doctrine of Scripture. Yet even here, the writer evidences careful insight into various nuances of Calvin's views.

This is a highly recommended text.

For the sake of brevity, I will keep this short, sweet, and to the point.

This is hands down the best biography I have read in a very long time. The life, theology, and movement created by John Calvin was clearly laid out. Not only was this abundantly clear, but it was such an enjoyable read! I don't know what a previous review was referring to when it said that this book is too complicated for the lay person. I found the majority of the book to be about what Calvin was doing with his life, rather than what he was teaching, although it does explain his theology, I thought, quite clearly. I'm confident that anyone with at least an interest with the life of this great reformer will find this to be interesting as well as inspiring!

I highly recommend this to anyone and everyone interested in the life of Calvin.

It's very painful to read the first few pages as they document Calvin's early childhood, where he lives, and education. It gets better and easier to read as you go on. My only problem is that you have to know a lot about theological events and people because the author mentions them without explanation, assuming that you will know what he is talking about. Therefore, you either have to look them up yourself or just keep reading.

I bought this as a gift for a Ph.D. theologian. He said he has read several Calvin biographies but this one was especially well done.

Calvin has a bit of a bad name among today’s Protestants. Calvinism is associated with a pernicious protestant doctrine of predestination, which holds that God chooses to save some and reject others. If you are (eternally) chosen you will accept the gospel, if not, you will reject the gospel because God withholds from you the gift of faith and working of the Holy Spirit, with the result that you will be rejected and cast into hell. There is nothing you can do about this, your eternal status does not depend in any degree upon you. It is, therefore, a matter of luck, or as a Calvinist would say, God’s sovereign election. God has made you for hell. So, I have always hated Calvin and his ridiculous TULIP doctrine, which seems to require a certain kind of moral deficiency to be accepted. The TULIP doctrine, is in fact, a modern acronym to describe a series of incorrect biblical premises. This whole issue is addressed and refuted by John C Lennox in his fabulous book, ‘Determined to believe’. So, if Calvin is wrong here, why read a biography about him? To be informed. To have an opinion about a man who continually crops up in Christian circles. Calvin is one of those credited with dragging Europe out of the middle ages. It should also be a general principle that in the modern age, people can be slandered and misrepresented, so it never hurts to hear them for oneself.
This is an excellent biography. A man’s life’s work. It will teach you a lot about life in 16th century Europe, the controversies at play and what it was like to be there. Then it tells the life story and paints a picture of a man with a far better claim to sainthood than Madam Teresa. Calvin was a formidable intellect, a university lecturer and lawyer, with a profound knowledge of Latin, Greek and Hebrew, who could write so beautifully and clearly that he shaped and developed the French language, much as the King James version of the Bible shaped English.
Calvin spent his life fighting persecution of one type or another and in the interim has produced a classic and seminal work, his ‘Institutes of the Christian Religion’. It was a work that Calvin updated throughout his life. It provides an interpretive framework around which the Bible can be understood and interpreted. Calvin was defining Christianity in a Europe that had long lost touch with the apostolic faith. What was the Bible saying? What did God want us to do? What were the objections? How was the Church to be organised? The Institutes provided a foundation for the Reformation. On this foundation, Calvin wrote commentaries on nearly all the books of the Bible. The commentaries could be short because all the core material was provided in the Institutes. He also preached hundreds of sermons, many extent today and kept up a massive correspondence. His output was prodigious but targeted. He was revered and hated. Like Luther he became a mouthpiece of the evangelical movement. He was revered because of the quality of his argumentation and his adherence to the Word of God in scripture and preaching. Calvin’s task was to legitimise a break from the corrupt Roman Catholicism of the 16th century. It was a volatile period and very strong opinions and arguments were in circulation. Over the course of his life, Calvin dismantled false trails and bogus doctrines by means of his intellect and moral authority. He won people over. He died a poor man, loved by many, hated by few.
This is an utterly compelling biography that will draw you in. I couldn’t put it down!

I found this book to be very interesting but it did feel a bit short. It does present some interesting detail about Calvin’s life but is perhaps weaker on his thought and his influence.
