"What he writes has the stamp of first-hand knowledge and the grace of a sympathetic style. The world owes a debt of gratitude that the accident of the discovery of the tomb brought to it so painstaking a workman as the author—one who was willing to sacrifice the golden possibility of haste and fame to the slow accumulation of scientific knowledge."—The New York Times "Let me try and tell the story of it all. It will not be easy, for the dramatic suddenness of the initial discovery left me in a dazed condition, and the months that have followed have been so crowded with incident that I have hardly had time to think." Among the hundreds of books written about ancient Egypt and Tutankhamun, you won't find an equal to archaeologist Howard Carter's powerful book about his discovery. His great work in many ways remained unfinished. He left us, however, this remarkable document of discovery. The book is Carter's personal story of the greatest adventure of his life—one that has not been surpassed in a century of archaeology. In 1904, retired American lawyer, Theodore Davis, famously declared that The Valley of the Kings in Thebes had given up all of its secrets, leaving nothing more to be discovered. He relinquished his exclusive rights to dig in The Valley. But as Howard Carter states in this volume, "The history of The Valley has never lacked the dramatic element." Some 18 years later, Carter made the richest archaeological discovery in history within yards of where Davis had dug. The world immediately became obsessed with everything Tutankhamun. From architecture, to household goods, to fashion, a early 20th-century surge in fascination with ancient Egypt took hold across the globe. This is not a dry scientific treatment of the excavation or the artifacts. What he imparts with this book is a sense of excitement, wonder, and mystery set expertly into a concise context of history and Egyptology, captivating layperson and specialist alike, young or old. Intertwining notes on Egyptian gods, religion, mythology, and magic, Carter spins an alluring real-life tale, setting the context for Egyptian history and Tutankamun. For the first time this amazing work is available for Kindle. With a new Introduction and updated footnotes, you'll have more context to follow this book than Carter's original readers did. Much information that was yet to be understood or discovered in 1922 is included in the Introduction.

This is a very enjoyable read. There are helpful explanations for those less versed in archeology and the history of ancient Egypt. Howard Carter’s attention to details are concise yet very human as he writes of the tourists and the time taken up with the tours the Egyptologists provided of the tomb thus slowing down their work and exposing the artifacts to damage.

All things Tut. Reccommend this book to anyone who wishes to understand even a small part of the treasures found and the trials that Carter went thru along with the experts sorting through the contents of the tomb. Great resource also for diagrams and color fotos of the objects. While reading Carter's account I was directed to this book as a companion text to help put images to Carter's descriptions. It's a shame Carter never got to compile his own account after all the work he did. Well worth the price.

I became interested in finding this book after attending a few classes on Archaeology and the Bible. Several references were made to the antiquities found in King Tut's tomb , the symbolism used in ancient Egypt, and the meticulous care given to those finds by Howard Carter and his team. I was delighted to find this as an e-book. Carter's attention to detail is amazing. This book becomes tedious to me as it describes item after item but I was interested in the care given to identify, catalogue, photograph, and support each item to prevent its' disintegration. The first few chapters of the book were particularly interesting as the initial search for the tomb over many years, is described. Carter was as much a treasure as the antiquities he searched for.

I liked the story but it is lacking on data about when they were getting to King Tut's actual body/tomb

It's quite well written and Carter explains many techniques they used to stabilize and restore the contents of the tomb. The ebook was well edited without losing any of Carter's intentions.

I'm doing a creative project related to the discovery of King Tuts tomb and this book provided not only the details of the project, but gave insight into the perspectives of the man, Howard Carter.

One of three volumes written by the archeologist who made the discovery. It seemed as if I was present at the find.

Something of the British arrogance still clings to the story. But, Carter's earnestness lights up his thrill at the discoveries and his sense of responsibility for preserving everything to better understand the time of the pharaohs.

This is the second time I have read Howard Carter's account of his discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb. Volume one is definitely the best of the three volumes. However, this edition does not have any photographs or drawings, which I feel are needed to understand the text fully.

The book tells the story of the discovery of Tutankhamun. I like the description of the tombs and what was found in them. The ebook also gives you extra information on Howard Carters account. One of the greatest finds of the last century.
