Teresa Bateman is the author of multiple picture books, including Fiona's Luck and A Plump and Perky Turkey. She has also published stories in Highlights and Cricket magazines. She lives in Washington State.

Laura Huliska-Beith is the illustrator of multiple picture books, including The Goodnight Train and The Recess Queen. She lives in Kansas City, MO, with her husband and two small dogs.

I grew up in Issaquah, Washington then received an Associates degree from Ricks College (now BYU-Idaho) and a Bachelors degree from BYU in Provo, UT. I have a Masters in Library and Information Science from the University of Washington.

I served an 18-month mission for my church to Argentina, and taught school for a year in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. I spent 35 years teaching, over 30 of which involved being a school librarian in Federal Way, Washington. I had always wanted to be a librarian because I love introducing children to books. It is the ideal job.

My retirement came just as the pandemic was hitting, which was providential, and gave me additional writing time!

Writing is a vital part of my life. I write daily and am always looking for new ideas. The world is full of interesting things, isn't it?

Fun to find the hidden pictures!
As a kid, I always enjoyed the Highlights Activity magazines. I saw that this book was a Highlights book and decided to give it a try. It is always fun for kids (and some adults) to have books that contain activities too. This book does this! As one turns each page, there is a large picture on one side and the story on the other. Around the story are pictures of items that are hidden within the larger picture. These are the objects to find. The story is that of Noah’s Ark in a simplistic format for a child. The illustrations are nice and colorful and represent the time well.

It's a beautiful and fun book. The story and illustrations were great. The hidden pictures are what made it super special. I had a wonderful experience sharing the search for hidden pictures with a friend who has Alzheimer's. From her childhood she remembered doing Highlights & she picked up finding the hidden pictures in this book immediately. Like everyone some were harder to find than others, but we had a great time working together on it..
I bought this for kids in a Sunday School class and found that both kids and adults loved it too.

I grew up with Highlights magazine and the hidden pictures were my favorites! This is a lovely book with colorful illustrations to go with the story. I anticipate that, once the child knows the pictures around the text are there to find within the adjacent illustration, they'll be a bit distracted :) Perhaps reading through the full story before telling them about the 'hidden pix' would be an idea.
Some of the pictures are upside down within the illustration, to add a bit of challenge (in a good way.) I'm pretty sure I would have found it easier to find them when I was a child then I do now. :)
It is rated for ages 4+, however I believe could start a bit earlier (if reading to the child.) It's a larger book, so might be harder for a younger child to hold. The corners are not crazy 'sharp' like some hardback books. Mine did come a bit banged up, assuming from manufacturing.

This book says it's rated for 4-8 year old children, but I saw the Highlights on the cover and was drawn in. I loved the Highlights hidden pictures as a kid. Sure, they weren't too difficult, but I always enjoyed looking for the various items. In fact, I still do and things like this often become a family activity. That's why I don't feel bad getting this even though my youngest daughter is already 9.

There is so much to like about this book from the colorful, fun pictures to the well written familiar story. The seek and find aspect is not overly difficult, but can still take a little time to find everything (if you get really stuck, the back can help you out) and the story is written in a way that you know it was geared for children, but it's not overly simplified that it would become annoying to reread over and over again. Something about the writing style actually made me feel like I had some kind of connection to the author so I looked her up. I don't know her, but she seems like a nice lady. The vocabulary uses words most children would understand well enough and it is written clearly so that early readers will easily be able to make out the lettering. The pages are higher quality than many children's books and the hard cover will protect it better while in a church bag or just being used at home. While my kids are still older than the recommended age group, it will still probably end up going to church with us for a few weeks.
