Two apparently harmless women reside in cottages one building apart in the idyllic English village of Little Camborne. Miss Finch and Miss Swallow, cousins, have put their pasts behind them and settled into conventional country life. But when a mysterious foreigner, Theodore Cadmus - from a Mediterranean island nobody has heard of - moves into the middle cottage, the safe monotony of their lives is shattered.

Soon, long-hidden secrets and long-held grudges threaten to surface, drawing all into a vortex of subterfuge, theft, violence, mayhem . . . and murder.

Review

Praise for Peter Ackroyd: Extraordinary, amazing, vivid, convincing. [Ackroyd's] view of life questions the role not just of the novel but of art and history, memory, time and much else ― Financial Times

Mr Cadmus is a treat of a tale. To a "polite" English village add a sprinkling of sinister. The result? Cosy and twisted, comic and gothic, with a show-stealing parrot -- JESS KIDD

Follows the mysterious Mr Cadmus who hails from a Mediterranean island nobody has heard of and turns life in the idyllic English village of Little Camborne upside down ―
The Times, Best books to look out for

A novel remarkable for [its] power, ingenuity and subtlety ―
London Review of Books

A darkly witty fable ... a tale of vengeance that begins to take on the swerving, lurid velocity of a fever dream ―
Spectator

Murderous intrigue plays out against a backdrop of curtain-twitching small-town banality in this playful black comedy ―
Sunday Times

Chillingly brilliant . . . sinister and stunningly well executed ―
Independent on Sunday

My favorite author delivers in this quirky, fascinating story.

A revenge tale, .murder mystery, unearthly occurrences. A pre-pub
review of this book made it sound intriguing, but I was left scratching my head. At least it was a quick read.

It's a darkly humorous, wickedly funny satirical story for 75% of the book, the last 25% it's confusing and I didn't liked it.
It's the first book I read by this author so I can't compare it to other works but I liked the style of writing and the humour.
A semi-great novella.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine

Mr. Cadmus, by Peter Ackroyd, published by   Canongate Books, began like a cozy mystery. Then it became dark (trigger warning: descriptive sexual act, death). It ended with legends, fantasy and mythology. While I knew who Mr. Ackroyd was, I hadn't read his work before.
Miss Finch & Miss Swallow (cousins) live in cottages at Little Camborne. Then new resident, Mr. Cadmus, moves in between them.
The settings are England & small Meditaranian Island, Caldera. The time periods jump around without much explanation. Seems to begin in present day, then back to the war, the Germans & Englishman mentioned, once we're in 1961, 1945, 1978, 1982, back & forth with the characters adolescent history.
This is a very short story which should have been an easy read. I appreciated the dark humor, but there was no direction to this story. Too many genres packed into a disjointed mishmash.
I received an advance digital copy of this book from Netgalley. The opinion is my voluntary review.

This is - without question - the worst book I have ever finished. I am not even sure why I finished it, other than the fact that it was quite short, and I kept thinking that there MUST be some reason for all of this nonsense. There wasn't. Spend your money...and more importantly your time...somewhere else. And, don't be suckered in by the positive reviews.

This book is written really sloppily - if you are going to write in Italian, get it checked by an Italian. It is full of cringing mistakes. Unforgivable.

Murders with surreal motive do not make for a riveting story.
Reading this was like earnestly following a maze and arriving at a centre with dank weeds and boiled coloured snails lying around.
Unsatisfying.

This started quite well, and was intriguing. However, about two thirds of the way it seemed to drift - personalities changed without real meaning for the story, and the conclusion was odd and weak. Not really for me.

2.0 out of 5 stars Messy
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 17, 2024
I downloaded the Kindle version and I wonder could this be my issue. I'm well read over most genres but have not read this author before. Bought on the reviews of 'weird' and 'quirky' because so much fiction writing now is formulaic and repetative, but it was simply badly written in my opinion. I realise that sounds harsh but there it is. No cohesion, made no sense, no real story, veered off in all directions and just got worse as it went on. We didn't really get to know the characters and Maud & Millicent could have been the same perso. A real shame because the issues covered were interesting and sensitive. Perhaps I just 'didn't get it'.
