Ivan the Terrible

Just what was so terrible about Ivan the Terrible? Most of us are familiar with this infamous nickname, but most fall short of being able to describe how he received such an ominous moniker. Maybe you’ve heard the stories of how Ivan killed his own son, poisoned his wives, and waged war on his neighbors, but these anecdotes are just minor details in the scheme of this man’s complicated life.

Inside you will read about...

- Ivan, the Neglected Orphan
- Ivan’s Liberation of Slaves
- War in the Baltic
- Intrigue and Diplomacy
- Ivan’s Final Redemption
- Ivan’s Last Days
And much more!

Ivan IV, otherwise known as Ivan the Terrible, was born with a heavy burden on his shoulders. He was thrust into the seat of what the Russians considered the Third Rome, granting him all the rights and privileges of the official steward of Orthodox Christian civilization in the east. In order to hold on to that right, he did indeed do some pretty terrible things.

It is a wonderful, very helpful idea to place significant history into a single volume containing all the salient facts that should be known, that can be read in a single hour. This allows readers to improve themselves with what they should know to be considered well-informed educated persons.
In thirteen very interesting, easy-to-read chapters, this book tells us about one of Russia’s most important leaders, Ivan the Terrible (1530-1584). The book tells us why he got this nickname, was it a fair depiction of him, how he was responsible for many wars and deaths, how he stopped the Islamic empire that had conquered the Christian Byzantine empire and saved his Christian government from becoming Islamic.
Ivan was crowned as Russia’s first Tsar, a Russian word for Caesar, in 1547 when he was only 16. Russia had many problem, including dissatisfaction by its nobility. Arguably, Ivan was forced to act with a strong hand to control and organize Russia. Readers will find his story fascinating and will realize that it is not easy to decide if he was truly terrible; and if he was, was he terrible in all ways and at all times.

Interesting and concise, to learn about the Russian czar his life, more could be included about the after effects of his workings on Russia and the neighboring countries, and the context of the time.

I gave Ivan the Terrible: A Life From Beginning to End, three stars, although 2.5 might be closer to the mark.

It was a quick read and covered the life of Ivan with extremely broad strokes. The book touched on some of the more important highlights of his reign, which is greatly appreciated

I would probably read it again, while waiting at a bus stop, if it was all that was available, aside from watching traffic go by

A simple irony, I believe his grandfather was known as Ivan the Great

Vision, madness and greatness often go hand in hand. Ivan, Terrible to some, liberator and reformer to others. The dichotomy of his life can't simply be summed up in one sentence. Therefore, I commend the author of this short bio for effectively separating fact from fiction, dispelling every myth about this infamous ruler, and setting the record straight.
Ivan was a man of vision. A vision that consumed him and led to an insatiable ambition. Throw in personal tragedies and you got an uncontrollable beast who at the slightest offense will unleash his fury.
As a man who also took his duties seriously, he was also willing to bargain with old foes to get what he wanted. Whereas he was the enemy of the elite, he became a hero to his lower subjects, a sort of folk hero who would do what was necessary to protect him from slave traders and other foreign threats.
I highly recommend this biography for those of you who are new to this subject.

This is an insightful biography of Ivan the terrible and what made him that way. From his wife to the murder of his own son I found this to be an interesting look at the man that shaped Russian politics for generations to come.

It is a brief, yet detailed enough, and fairly balanced hi-story for the reign of Ivan IV.

The book's easy to flip through the pages even for beginners to the complicated Russian history, the struggling and thriving geopolitical and cultural bridge in-between the East and the West.

Ivan does not (for the times anyway) come across as all that 'terrible'?
The more one reads about the history of our blue planet - the more one wonders about the untold millions that have been killed in successive (and continuing) wars - much of them over some 'religion' or other...
Some reviewers seems to miss the point of 'Hourly History' - they are MEANT to be short and read in about an hour :-).
This one is another quick look at an interesting historical figure - with some (necessary?) guesswork and assumptions.

Ivan the Terrible: A Life From Beginning to End was an interesting book. I had heard of Ivan the Terrible, but I only knew of him has a Tsar of Russia. In his early life, he was more or less locked away and brought out has necessary. When he first became Tsar, he was almost killed by the Russian people. He was pious and reformed the Russian system of government at that time. His life was somewhat tragic because the nobles constantly played palace politics. Ivan the Terrible overall didn’t appear to be a very good general or he couldn’t pick appropriate leadership for his military. This short synopsis of his life and career provided me with more than enough information about the man. I like the book, okay, but I have no further interest in Ivan the Terrible.

An extremely short narrative which can be read in a day that is little more than a warmed up listing of events. Little exploration of the man and his character and what led to his reputation.

IVAN THE TERRIBLE

5.0 out of 5 stars Nicely written, Not so Terrible a Tale !
Reviewed in India on September 21, 2019
I wonder why Ivan IV is given the moniker of Terrible! By any accounts, if we go by this volume, he was not exorbitantly terrible if viewed in the perspective of contemporary or overall historical chronicle over the millennia. Of course, he had all the weaknesses that an autocratic ruler develops in one's character, i.e; tendency to murder the dear ones over slightest suspicion, debauchery, cowardice etc.
But every historical tale suggests that Karma ultimately catches up with the doer irrespective of whatever one's stature! Ivan too met with his karmic fallouts and died by design of his courtiers: by poisoning.
Human body is ephimeral and irrespective of how high one deems oneself, one is equally susceptible to instant death like all other creatures of the world!
