We Australians know about Flinders, right? He circumnavigated Australia and identified it as a continent - right? But I found there was much more to learn about this navigator than we learnt at school. As a seaman of renown himself, the author expertly takes us along on Flinders' voyages, highlighting his skill in a way that every reader will enjoy. A great read for Australian history lovers .. ....and even those who don't think they are!

A superb story of an outstanding explorer told by a master story teller of the sea. It is to Flinders that we owe for the word Australia and due to the vagaries of early the hazards of travelling by ship in that era a life that ended all to soon.
Mundle is a master of his craft and my only fear is that he will run out of great characters of Australian maritime history to write about.

Well written story of the mapping by Flinders of the Australian continent. An easy to read book and worth reading to anyone interested in early Australian History and of the challenges of sailing. The logistics of doing business in the late 18th century were truly amazing. Flinder's hand sketched maps are so close to what we know them to be today. The book does an excellent job of explaining how sailors looked after their boats and crew in great detail.

Well researched and written. An easy read which covers the subject well and gives an insight into many of the geographical areas and names of places that we know so well. It also portrays the extreme difficilties encountered by our early explorers and the difficulty in maritime navigation that we now take for granted with modern maps and technology

A really great book about a really great explorer. I'm impressed by the huge amount of information that the author had found on Flinders. I'm so pleased I decided read it.

The book explains the early history of Australia. The details of his exploration are hard to follow in detail, not having crafts, not maps, of the area. I skimmed many of excerpts from letters and official documents.

The book on Flinders was well written and very interesting. It gave a detailed view of a very amazing man.

Well researched well written and very readable. I read this book whilst checking the places he named and discovered on Google earth. This helped to understand how difficult his works were to achieve

I enjoyed this book and learning about early Australian history. Although the author heaps praise on Flinders, my take on Flinders is slightly less glowing. Notwithstanding his amazing achievements inc circumnavigation of Australia, I thought that some of his decision making throughout his endeavours could be found to be wanting. No doubt a great man nonetheless.

Rob Mundle really knows his seafaring and does a fine job describing Flinders usually understated achievements.

The highlights of the book are the passages when he outlines the explorers' experiences in often tiny seacraft seeing our coast upclose for the first time through European eyes. Wonderful looking back at the many familar ports and coastal features discovered by Flinders and Bass.

There are many naval mishaps to keep the story alive but the ultimate fate of the two protagonists is rather sad and still under recognised by most of my countrymen and women.

Good biography of a very interesting explorer/navigator - Flinders sailed with Captain Bligh who in turn had sailed with Captain Cook and between them they mapped Australia and New Zealand in such detail they would be usable today. Mariners from our Golden Age- An excellent read-
