The figure type of the Spinario (boy with a thorn) originated in Hellenistic art of the late 3rd century BCE. The popular genre motif of the shepherd or peasant boy is conveyed in several versions and different materials. This statue was amended in the 19th century CE after a bronze from the early Roman imperial age. Marble. Roman copy, around 150 CE. Acquired in Rome, Italy, in 1826 CE. It is on display at the Altes Museum in Berlin, Germany.
