Roman Fresco Fragment with Nilotic Landscape — This fragment of a Roman fresco was made in Italy c. 1-79 CE and depicts a Nilotic setting. Images of scenes set on the Nile became increasingly popular after the 1st Century BCE as a kind of Egyptomania gripped the Roman Empire. This scene portrays a crocodile approaching a small figure in a boat, possibly a pigmy, with a thatched hut and colonnaded bridge in the background.
