A shirt of chainmail and plate armour belonging to Sultan Qaitbay (r. 1468–1496 CE) of the Mamluk Sultanate. The mail is made of iron and copper alloy. The gold-damascened steel plates are intricately engraved with scrolling foliage and vines, and circular medallions enclosing six-pointed stars. 87 plates in total complete the set, and would have protected Qaitbay's most vulnerable areas. Probably made in Egypt. 78.7 cm (31 in) x 138.4 cm (54 1/2 in). Weight: 11.41 kg (25 lb 2.4 oz). Collection of Metropolitan Museum of Art.
