A map illustrating the reign of Samuil (Bulgarian: Самуил,) Tsar of the First Bulgarian Empire from 997 to 1014. His rule faced significant challenges, particularly the expansionist policies of the Byzantine Empire under Emperor Basil II (later known as Basil the Bulgar Slayer.) The conflict between Bulgaria and Byzantium, known as the Byzantine-Bulgarian Wars, defined much of Samuil's rule.
Although early on, the Bulgarians scored decisive victories against the Slavic principalities to the West, led an expedition into the Kingdoms of Croatia and Hungary, and launched offensive operations into Byzantine territory, Samuil's forces eventually suffered a crushing defeat at the Battle of Kleidion in 1014. Following this, the First Bulgarian Empire began to crumble, and with Samuil's death, it effectively came to an end and was incorporated into Byzantium.
