Assyrian military equipment was particularly effective. Pointed helmets deflected blows or missiles, and were commonly issued to Assyrian soldiers. This iron example was decorated with bronze inlay, now corroded to a greenish color. The design shows a procession of attendants and arched panel framing a king. Around the rim, a series of holes shows were the original lining was attached. From the north-West Palace at Nimrud, northern Mesopotamia, Iraq. Circa 800-700 BCE. (The British Museum, London)
