Persephone, also known as Kore or Proserpina is the Greek goddess of vegetation and grain, daughter of the goddess of agriculture and fertility of the earth, Demeter. In Greek Mythology, Persephone was the wife of Hades and seen as a protectress of the afterlife. According to mythology, Persephone was picking flowers in a meadow when Hades, the god of the underworld, fell in love with her and carried her off in his chariot to live with him.

Demeter withdrew from the world after her daughter was abducted and created a drought to force the other gods to help release Persephone from Hades grasp. As the drought got worse, Zeus made Hermes visit the underworld and persuade Hades to give Persephone back to her mother. In one version of the myth, Hades gave Persephone a pomegranate seed, whose divine taste would compel her to stay with him.
